The trouble started the night before the job, when the delivery did not have enough decking, when I called the sells person, I was assured that they would be overseeing the process, and that more would be brought out if needed. The crew that was sent out was a sub-contractor from out of state, where none of the crew spoke English. Despite, the fact that it was well known to the company that the roof was part of a complete renovation of my family home, this crew was surprised and visibly unpleased that another crew was working on property while they were there. The crew was completely unprofessional and kept calling my nephew- who is overseeing the renovation crew- an asshole in Spanish. I was told originally, they had their own crew and they were very professional and did a good job, so I was not pleased with the caliber of the sub-contractors at all. Of course, attitude can easily be forgiven if the quality of work is there, sadly it was not.
The job they did was rushed, full of mistakes, and completely shoddy. Visible dips in the roof, no clips used to support decking, some deck has only two nails where other parts are full of nails without any rhyme or reason to why. They were also not coordinating with my crew inside and would shoot nails dangerously close to my crew, without warning. One of the most obvious and unexplained defects in the work, is that they only replaced a small fraction of the decking, while leaving obviously warped, rotted, and molded decking on the roof. The representative from the company only appeared once for a brief period during the job. I talked with the quality manager in charge of this project, the next day and showed him the pictures of the work that was done. At first, he was defensive but when he started to listen and look at the problems with the job, he agreed to go out to the house that evening to inspect the work. He was shown one area and said he didn’t have to look anymore, he made promises that they would make everything all right. At this point I was willing to work with them and get this resolved. However, about 3 days later, obviously he had talked with his supervisors and completely changed his tone and was saying if we wanted it redone there would be additional costs etc. I told him I wanted to speak with his manager and was called by him later that day. After a heated argument where the manager was arguing whose standards was I going by for decking needing replaced, and shoddy workmanship, he also started arguing the contract, talking about no verbal modifications to the contract. (I replied that if he wanted to resolve this in litigation, have his attorney call me since I am an attorney and was trying to give them a chance to do the right thing). Finally, after much argument and stress, talks shifted from arguments to trying to resolve. They even sent a proposed resolution, in a proposed contract.
The more I thought about how they handled this situation, the angrier I grew, and grew more concerned about what kind of job had been done ( or not done) on my family home. I decided to have an independent HAAG Certified Roof Inspector evaluate the work that had been done, on the chance that I was being too critical and that this was at least acceptable workmanship. However, the inspector not only confirmed what I could see, and what my crew had told me, but also brought new issues to light including many items not being up to code. Items like the area around the chimney were done in a subpar not to code manner. All the material that was used such as felt and plywood was the cheapest and least durable items that could be used. Don’t expect OSB or even a high-quality plywood, this is bottom of the barrel material that was used. For this reason and now having a complete lack of trust on anything this company says or does, I will not have them back at my property and have elected to have another company do the work that Best Choice should have done right in the first place.
