Rappahannock Electric Cooperative is a consumer owned utility which provides electric service to more than 85,000 connections in parts of 16 Virginia counties. REC maintains more than 10,000 miles of power lines through its service area, which ranges from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the mouth of the Rappahannock River. The cooperative serves a variety of residential, commercial, and industrial accounts. REC also provides the electricity to Paramount's Kings Dominion, Merillat Industries, and GE Fanuc. The cooperative is comprised of a 12-member board of directors, elected by REC's customer-owners. At the annual meeting, four directors are elected to serve three-year terms. It was formed in 1980 with the merger of two cooperatives, Virginia Electric Cooperative in Bowling Green and Northern Piedmont Electric Cooperative in Culpeper, Va. The cooperative's headquarters are in Spotsylvania County.
